Will Neurofeedback cure my condition?

Generally Neurofeedback cannot be considered ‘a cure’ however it can reduce problematic symptoms and improve functioning.  Improvements and reduction of symptoms will vary between each individual depending on the complexity of their condition.

Are there any side effects?

Neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive treatment and as such no significant side effects have been found.  The brain can be quite complex, adjustments that need to be made along the neurofeedback training are applied as needed.  There are over 250 published scientific studies on Neurofeedback and none of them report harmful side effects.  Individuals have reported feeling sleepy or tired after sessions however this is short term as the brain is in ‘training mode’ during a session.

How often do you need to have the sessions and how long does each session last and how long does it take?

Research suggests that 20-60 sessions are required for long-term sustained change depending on your condition.  For individuals with Anxiety or Depression 20 -25 sessions may be needed.  However for conditions such as ADHD, PTSD or ASD longer treatment may be required 60 sessions or more.  The length of sessions are usually discussed in your initial consultation.  It should be noted the more complex the condition the more sessions may be needed.  It is recommended training once a week, you can train more intensively at 2-3 times a week if needed.  Double sessions are also available for individuals that travel long distance.

One session of neurofeedback training lasts for 30 minutes.  Sessions will normally involve a mixture of Neurofeedback training and symptom review or counselling.

Will Neurofeedback hurt?

Neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive therapy and does not hurt at all.  Most individuals find the process relaxing because there is no physical or mental effort required.  No electricity is being put into your brain, we are merely measuring your brain wave activity and assisting your brain to re-train and heal.

Can I stop taking my medications?

A lot of the time people often come to neurofeedback training because they are having side effects and problems with their current medications and aim to withdraw from taking medications.  It is understandable that taking medications can be exhausting and may feel harmful.  With this said I cannot provide any medical advice as I am not a medical practitioner or doctor.  It is important that you communicate with your prescribing clinician regarding medication.

Individuals have also reported that after successful completion of neurofeedback training that medications may be required at lower doses or are no longer needed, this is due to the improvement in brain self-regulation and reduction in problematic symptoms.  Again it is important to always check in with your prescribing physician regarding your medication.

Do the effects of Neurofeedback last?

Research has indicated that once neurofeedback training has been successfully completed and changes stabilised, then effects are maintained.  Individuals do however at times require ‘top ups’ if needed.  Individuals have also reported that from neurofeedback training improvements in brain functioning continue to increase.

Does it work for everyone?

Unfortunately Neurofeedback is not for everyone.   There is no one size fits all proposition with Neurofeedback training.  Sometimes conditions can be quite complex and there may be a need for other treatment options.  Other variables may be influencing your condition for example environmental factors, food intolerances, allergies or hormonal imbalances.  These can additionally be explored in a kinesiology session if needed.

What do I need to bring with me to my appointment?

If you are a new client please fill in the client intake questionnaire form and bring this with you to your initial appointment. This form can be downloaded from my website or it can be emailed to you.

Please note for the mini brain map assessment (initial appointment) EEG paste will be placed on 9 spots on your scalp and your ear lobes. For this reason it is advised that hair products for example gel or pomade not be used as this can interfere with the readings. I will try and remove as much paste from your scalp after the appointment.

If you wear glasses please bring this with you as there is a reading task as part of the mini brain map assessment.

Does what we talk about remain confidential?

Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and practitioner. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust with highly sensitive subject matter that is usually not discussed anywhere but the therapist's office.   All information you provide is kept confidential and secure at all times. The law protects the relationship between a client and a counsellor, and information cannot be disclosed without written permission. However, state law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations:

  • Legal court subpoena, or if I identify an imminent threat of harm to you or another person I may decide, without obligation to do so, to report that information

  • Mandated to report the abuse of a child under 16 years of age.

  • Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse, for which I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.

  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, I will take further measures without their permission that are provided to me by law in order to ensure their safety.
