An initial consultation will be completed in order to understand your situation and develop a Neurofeedback treatment plan. There is no cookie cutter approach with Neurofeedback it is different for everyone.  The initial appointment lasts for approximately 2 hours and consists of a clinical interview in order to gather relevant history and information that pertains to your issues/goals.  The second part of the consultation consists of a ‘mini brain mapping procedure’ this involves placing 9 sensors on your scalp with EEG paste and measuring readings at each points of the scalp with your eyes opened, closed and reading a book for 1-3 minutes. (*Please note EEG paste will be placed on different areas of your scalp for the initial assessment).  The readings are then discussed with you and what areas of the brain can be trained relevant to your condition and goals. Please note that a written report is not provided rather verbal feedback only.  Once feedback is given we can then start the brain training.

During a Neurofeedback session you sit comfortably in a chair with headphones watching a movie or game for 30 minutes, sensors are attached to your scalp and earlobes via EEG paste.  Your brain wave activity is then picked up through the sensors and is presented as different frequency bands to the practitioners screen.  These brain waves are monitored and the desired frequency parameters set based on the information from your initial consultation. The neurofeedback program then challenges your brain and ‘rewards’ these desired frequencies in the form of a ‘feedback beeping sound’ via the headphones.  So as you are watching the movie your brain receives its feedback via headphones on the computer screen.  No electricity enters your brain, the sensors merely read information from the brain and relay it to the neurofeedback computer program.   The beeping sounds are the auditory part of the neurofeedback and are essentially telling your brain that it is doing a great job.  The movie or game is the visual part of the neurofeedback.  The movie continuously becomes dark or clear, the brain is rewarded when the movie becomes clear. On the other hand when the brain produces unfavourable brain wave patterns the movie becomes dark.  When the brain receives the visual and auditory rewards simultaneously you receive the feedback beeping sound, this means that it is performing at its optimum level.  Gradually overtime your brain learns to work at a more optimal level.
